Why keep bees?

Why keep bees?

What is a better way to start a blog than tell you why anyone in today’s very busy world would want to keep bees? As you may know, the bees may sting, scare the neighbors, swarm in one’s yard (preferably during a nice hot weekend planned for outdoor activities and barbeque) and generally require one’s serious research to become a successful enterprise. After keeping goats, chickens, donkeys, cats, dogs, and a whole menagerie of small house pets, I found bees to be very challenging. So, here is my short list of reasons why I stuck with beekeeping:
1. I love the benefits of natural, antibiotic free and miticide free local honey, propolis, beeswax and royal jelly for my family and free pollinator services for my garden.
2. I enjoy relatively flexible schedule of maintenance.
3. I find it pure joy to work with bees, connecting with nature, slowing down, and appreciating every single moment.
So, there, it is as simple as that. Today, many are looking at backyard chickens and square foot gardening as their way to sustainable living. Perhaps, honey bees can be the next thing?
